Mike Dunn

Head Fabrication Instructor

When did you join Nigg Skills Academy?

I joined the academy in the summer of 2023.

What is your background?

I was one of the first graduates from Nigg Skills Academy, on the pilot programme in 2012 – so it’s great to be back!

I originally worked in the Post Office for 10 years, but game to the academy to train as I wanted a career change. After an apprenticeship, I worked as a rope access technician, in rig repair, and in fabrication workshops.

In 2015, I took a career break to work in social work and housing support, where I found I really enjoyed working with people and helping them learn. That’s what led me back to the academy, to share what I’ve learned during my time in the industry,

I’ve come full circle – from student to instructor – and I feel like I’ve finally found my calling.

What advice would you give to someone starting a career in the energy & engineering sector?

There’s no age limit to entering the industry, or to learning new skills. From school leavers in their teens to folk in their late 50s looking for a career change, there are opportunities for everyone at Nigg Skills Academy.
